# Background Tasks - BackgroundTasks¶

You can declare a parameter in a _path operation function_ or dependency function with the type `BackgroundTasks`, and then you can use it to schedule the execution of background tasks after the response is sent.

You can import it directly from `fastapi`:

```
from fastapi import BackgroundTasks
```

## fastapi.BackgroundTasks [¶](#fastapibackgroundtasks-)

```
BackgroundTasks(tasks=None)
```

Bases: `BackgroundTasks`

A collection of background tasks that will be called after a response has been sent to the client.

Read more about it in the [FastAPI docs for Background Tasks](/guides/tutorial-user-guide-background-tasks).

#### Example[¶](#example)

```
from fastapi import BackgroundTasks, FastAPI
app = FastAPI()
def write_notification(email: str, message=""):
    with open("log.txt", mode="w") as email_file:
        content = f"notification for {email}: {message}"
        email_file.write(content)
@app.post("/send-notification/{email}")
async def send_notification(email: str, background_tasks: BackgroundTasks):
    background_tasks.add_task(write_notification, email, message="some notification")
    return {"message": "Notification sent in the background"}
```

```
### kwargs `instance-attribute` [¶](#kwargs-instance-attribute-)
```

```
tasks = list(tasks) if tasks else []
```

### add\_task [¶](#addtask-)

```
add_task(func, *args, **kwargs)
```

Add a function to be called in the background after the response is sent.
